Box tree moth was recently found in several new areas, including Chatauqua Co., NY; Berkeley Co., WV; Clarke and Loudon Cos., VA; and Washington Co., MD. In NY the new detection is within the current state quarantine area. One among very few caterpillars known to attack boxwood, BTM defoliates and kills plants (boxwood is the only known host). Although it can be controlled, often infestations are discovered after damage is extensive. NY State Department of Agriculture and Markets officials are requesting citizens report sightings of box tree moth in new counties (other than Niagara, Erie, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Cayuga, or Oswego) — to report, click here.
